For this Food Odyssey issue, the NOW! Bali spa team asks – What is your skin eating? And yes, seriously, your skin absorbs the ingredients you place on it as much as if you were feeding it directly to your mouth.
So why, we ask, would you put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t eat?
Because you can, and it’s good for you.
So while we don’t recommend chomping on gold nuggets or expect you to eat large quantities of lavender flowers, we do recommend them for your body to eat up through your skin.
On Bali’s south-west coast, in Canggu, GOLD DUST has recently recreated a boutique beauty lounge and spa for treatments of the entire body. A beautiful location to spend time and a relaxing environment, Gold Dust, as its name implies, offers treatments that use pure gold. The gold leaf facial is a great way to introduce yourself to the powerful properties of gold, and from there you can progress to the Gold Collagen Mask or the Eye Mask.
Gold, in powder form, has been used for centuries, world over, as a restorative, curative and beauty enhancement ingredient. The Ancient Egyptians found the use of gold in their cosmetics reduced signs of aging, including lines and loss of elasticity. They learned that gold acted as a hydrating agent, sealing in the moisture of the skin, reducing the loss of collagen and improving the appearance of the skin as a result of the activated circulation and metabolism.
Scientists have described gold as having biocompatibility, meaning it is not rejected by the body and it is used in a remarkable range of modern medical treatments, including those for arthritic and rheumatoid conditions. Given this information, it would appear that a GOLD DUST facial is not only great for your skin, but it may just lend itself to better all round health. Our personal experience of gold treatments has been extremely positive, and the aspect we enjoy (almost as much as knowing we are doing more good things to our skin) is the delicious glow the skin takes on after a gold treatment.
Other treatments at GOLD DUST are equally full of goodness and all are free of chemical ingredients and dyes. They offer great massages and will take excellent care of your hair, hands and nails.
Like GOLD DUST, Alila Spa loves natural products that feed the skin, and like GOLD DUST, they also embrace everything that is good about (and for) Bali in their philosophies and treatments. Their Indian Fig Cream is something we had trouble NOT eating, it is so delicious on the skin. This velvety mousse uses the tamarind fruit, known to promote healing, in conjunction with pure vanilla and a rare ‘brown’ lavender that lends an aroma to the cream that makes it perfectly alluring for both men and women.
Alila has also created a spray mist that should be in everyone’s hand luggage. On a recent flight it was the only thing that kept us sane and hydrated over the hours of in-flight recycled air. It created a personal aroma ‘shell’ that kept out the intrusion of food and feet aromas that were accumulating!
Visit Alila in Manggis on the east coast, Soori on the west, on the cliffs at Uluwatu or in the hills of Ubud. Their products, which are used in their treatments, are also available to buy.
