This magazine is dedicated to visitors to Bali, whether you are here for a week or a month, we are here to try to help you have a good time. But I’m afraid you are going to have to work a bit harder than you used to, that is, if you want to have a “magical experience”.

My point is this: why come to Bali and not have a “magical” experience, when they are there to be had! Yes you are having a great time. The hotel/villa is luxurious and comfortable and you are enjoying the food, not scared of getting ill as used to be the case, everyone speaks English/Japanese, etc. now and there’s tons of taxis, even more restaurants, thousands of spas, and even more shops! But do these give you a magical experience, or just a very good, but honestly quite ordinary one?

Much poetry has been written about experiences that leave you breathless, excited and deeply impressed. Many people try to describe occasions when they were moved to tears of joy or happiness, or just experience emotions too strong to contain. I’ve never heard of that happening in a shopping mall, nor even in a hotel or villa environment, and honestly those amazing “club moments” are just alcohol inspired!

So where do these magic moments happen? This is where the work comes in. You have to get out of the developed, urbanised south, away from the traffic jams, away from the shops, the villas and the malls. Into the quiet of the countryside. Up the sides of the mountains. Standing on cliff tops. Sitting quietly in temple compounds.

You cannot force the moment, you have to be there and wait, and watch and appreciate.
The people of Bali are in touch with the spirit world, they are artistic and expressive, and to see the ceremonies, to see the dance, to hear the music is to enter a different world. This is when magical moments occur.

Do not expect them as you sit poolside, or sip cocktails at the bar. Those are fun, but surely not what you’ve come to Bali for? Go and find some magic. Walk through the fields. Stand on top of a cliff. There really are magical moments just waiting for you.
