LITERARY LOVERS

As a literary festival, naturally Ubud Writers & Readers Festival has lots to entice the book lovers out there. With over 150 writers from more than 25 countries, including VS Naipaul, Amitav Ghosh, Val McDermid, Cyrus Mistry, Tash Aw, Eimear McBride and more, it’s an exciting celebration of global issues, big ideas, and extraordinary stories. Our Main Programme runs from Oct 2-5, each day a smorgasbord of intriguing in-conversations, panel sessions and discussions about literature and the world at large.

SELF IMPROVERS

Aspiring writers, storytellers, scriptwriters, poets, illustrators and more, the Workshop Programme is for you. Whether you’re after something informal or an intensive master class, this is your chance to learn from the best. Join a fun letter-writing session with short story writer Andrew Lam, tackle good script-writing with Rolf de Heer, transform into a comic book artist with Ant Sang, or many more besides.

TRAVELLERS

Travelling to Ubud is only half the fun. Take in a delectable Traveller’s Lunch with travel writing great Colin Thubron, intrepid adventurer Tim Cope and bestselling Indonesian author Ahmad Fuadi. Or, jump on two wheels for a literary bike tour, or go slow and take a “Jalan Jalan” (a wander) with author of hit book Savage Harvest, Carl Hoffman.

FOODIES

It’s not just about the written word. Cooking demonstrations lead by the Festival’s exotic authors and chefs are held daily near the main venue in The Kitchen, providing an up close and personal encounter of the writer’s culinary skills. You can feast on words, wisdom and home-cooked specialties, while soaking in the laid-back ambience of Ubud.

CULTURAL WARRIORS

Want to dive headfirst into all things Balinese culture? Cultural Workshops give you a chance to get hands-on, trying out Batik, Balinese cooking, herb walks, offering making, painting, and more.

GLOBAL CITIZENS

Plenty of Festival participants are ardent human rights activists and social commentators, from the one-time UN Representative in Sudan Mukesh Kapila, to frontline journalist Pallavi Aiyar, cyber-dissident and secretary of PEN Myanmar Nay Phone Latt, author of The Wisdom of Whores and Indonesia Etc. Elizabeth Pisani, and Polish activist, editor and journalist Adam Michnik.

For the environmentally aware, the exciting Environment Day programme on October 5 held at the award-winning Fivelements—a majestic bamboo pavilion—features discussions on climate change, coral rehabilitation and Indonesia’s forests with spokespeople, including conservationist Tim Flannery, Keibo Oiwa, environmentalist and media personality Nadya Hutagalung, CEO of Body Shop Indonesia Suzy Hutomo, and coral reef artist and activist Celia Gregory.

DIGITAL JUNKIES

For the first time, the Festival is decamping to incredible co-working space Hubud for a series of digital dialogues perfect for creative innovators, data junkies and the tech-curious for the Festival weekend, October 4-5.

FUN SEEKERS

When the sun goes down the Festival Club begins with a free programme that runs past midnight and provides a chance to kick off your heels, sip on iridescent cocktails, laugh, relax and meet the authors, including poet Paulo José Miranda, author Minae Mizumura, writer Aline Davidoff, Icelandic novelists and collaborators Bjork and Sjón, and many more.

Arts lovers can witness world-famous didgeridoo player William Barton, dance-opera fusion Ontosoroh, a tribute night for the iconic Balinese artist Lempad, a Pecha Kucha and a Poetry Slam. All of the Festival’s arts events are free, as are the film screenings.
