With many cosmetic products, there is a dazzling array of ingredients involved. Serums and salves full of unpronounceable names such as ‘hydrxyethylpiperazine,’ along with chemical representations of plant extracts that have been grown in laboratories and the latest miracle break-through ingredient which promises to leave your skin feeling ‘plumper,’ looking ‘younger,’ and through ‘gene-activating,’ combat the effects of aging, pollution, stress and fatigue.
All that in a bottle that will most likely have been flown from far flung parts of the planet and sold to you at a price that hardly reflects the value of the contents. In some cases the exotic container, presentation and packaging costs more than the ingredients inside.
So it’s no wonder that the appeal of personal products, transparently and, or locally made, with all ingredients readily identifiable, is growing. In Bali, with its variety of plants for oil extraction, pure carrier oils of coconut and the wealth of traditional knowledge, there are a number of island products available to the consumer that don’t waste your money on printed promises but instead deliver high quality, effective and ‘natural’ products that are immediately understandable, usable and beneficial.
Spa in a spray
Bali has recently been introduced to a Swiss product, Biozome, from Swiss Phytomedics. It lists all of its ingredients on the bottle, each one clearly understood. Available in salons in Bali including La Beaute in Pengubengan, Art of Body on Jalan Mertanandi and Jari Menari on Jalan Basangkasa, the 100% natural repair and lift spray works in conjunction with any beauty routine to assist in diminishing dryness and the effects of sun and pollution. The product is to be sprayed on the skin of the face and neck twice daily as a hydrating emulsion that brings relief and rejuvenation to all skin types, male and female. Containing vitamins and extracts of essential oils, its application is as rejuvenating as its effects and it immediately brightens the mind with its fresh scent and dewy, moist sensation.
Moroccan Beauty Knowledge
By combining traditional knowledge from her home country, Morocco, with the natural ingredients of the island, the creator of Loraine has produced a range of body and face care items that incorporate aromatherapy. Her concept is to combine a natural beauty range that will contain properties to increase physical and mental wellbeing. L’Origine is available at Earth Café in Seminyak and Ubud and also at Semara Spa in Seminyak.
L’Origine has a stunning honey based body scrub that echoes the traditional scrubs of Morocco used to stimulate blood flow and improve the tone of the skin, leaving a beautiful soft sheen on the skin after use. L’Origine’s other body treatments include the citrusy Kenza Oil, and the sweet, floral Pure Body cream, which softens the skin, and through the aromatherapy ingredients, creates a calming sensation.
In keeping with her own philosophy, L’Origine’s creator will tailor products that are specific to not just your skin type but your personality. You can have a private consultation to produce a personal recipe for your skin and soul.
Another company that designs to your desire is Republic of Soap in Jalan Gunung Salak. Their eponymous soaps are available in gift and health shops on the island, with distinct aromas of the archipelago and their body products are available, often under private label, in Bali’s top day spas and hotels. But if you want to take it even further, you can make an appointment to create your very own range! That way you can give personalized birthday presents and ensure you will never run out of your select brand of palm oil free soap. Wherever you travel, you will know you are using a product of pure ingredients of your own choosing.
And while we are on the subject of desire, there is a rather wonderful new product locally made and 100% organic that promises to be the best not-kept-secret to woman’s internal health and happiness. Made for women by women, using ingredients clearly written on the label, and no chemicals, the Isla soap stick application attends to a range of feminine needs including the prolonging of freshness and comfort for the skin’s most sensitive area.
