South Coast Sedution

Coastal Living | Written By, Sachi Kondo |

Happy hours and happy crowds, water sports and five-star resorts – yes Bali’s south coast is where all the action is, where lifestyle and leisure come together for an island experience that beckon many to its shores.

From slow-moving Sanur to the new buzz of Canggu and the lavish quarters of Nusa Dua, variety and excitement run along the southern coast meaning it’s rare to run out of things to do and places to see. Blessed with black sand beauties on its western side, as well as golden beaches backdropped by dramatic cliffs at its most southern point, even the coastline offers diversity. Certainly Bali’s busiest area, we trust the south actually needs no introduction, but this brief guide serves as a highlight reel of what you can get up to all year round in Bali’s most sought-after spots.

Water Sports

The seas around Bali provide endless experiences: those looking to jump into the deep-end of  water-based activities, beyond snorkelling and diving, will have plenty to quench their thirst with Bali’s plethora of water sport offerings.

Of course, not all water sports are found in the water, as high-altitude thrills also take place at Tanjung Benoa, the island’s main playground for water sports. Friendly waters and neighbouring resort complexes are to thank for this! Yes, if you’re looking to speed on a jet ski, take a tumble on a banana boat or check out the views with some parasailing, this is where to go.

Whatever you decide to take up, be sure that the guides will show you the ropes, including the how-to’s and safety procedures of you chosen water sport. If you’re not much of an adrenaline-seeker, some guides will be happy to accompany on your ‘ride’.

If you’re staying in a resort, ask a hotel staff to organise your chosen activities. For visiting guests, you’ll come across agencies in the area or representatives on the beach that offer activities and packages. Advance bookings are not typically required.

Enjoying the same southeast views, adored for its relaxed coastal ambience, Sanur beaches offer waves that break far out in the distance, making its shores ideal to swim, sunbathe, or better yet, go sailing!

Accompanied by a colourful jukung fishing boat, you’ll glide through clear azure waters on a catamaran staffed by skilled crew – with you as the skipper! Learn the ropes of sailing by opting for half-day sailing sessions or go all the way and sail to the Gilis or Lombok on a week-long sailing excursion.

If you’re here for a break, a surf break that is, well Bali has so many to offer! Kuta is the original surf capital of the island, where it has now become a haven for those looking to learn to catch their very first wave. Canggu, located north of Kuta, also boasts great waves for beginner to intermediate surfers, and has become a buzzing new surfers hangout. For the real daredevils looking to distance themselves from the novices, head to Bukit Peninsula where thundering barrels entice the brave and the skilled. Padang Padang, Dreamland, Impossibles, Balangan, Suluban and Bingin are where the big shot surfers will go. Beginners, steer clear, unless you’ve come to learn a thing or two.

Beach Clubs

Home to one of the best sunset spots on the island, Potato Head Beach Club has become a household name among Bali’s prestigious day-club and nightlife scene. The beach club hosts four restaurants, four bars, an infinity pool and large lawn, all overlooking the Indian Ocean. Open every day from breakfast until late, Potato Head holds sought-after programmes of dance parties and exhibitions supporting local and international DJs, musicians, artists, and architects. Accompanied by consciously curated cocktails and dishes, often promising unique take Indonesian twists, you can be sure to have a good time at this beach club meets cultural hub. Keep your eyes peeled for their regular one-day music festival, Sun Down Circle, that goes from sunrise to sunset.
