An ancient legend tells the story of Jayaprana. A handsome man, who fell in love with an equally beautiful woman called Layonsari. They were happily married but many were jealous of their love, including the King of Pulaki, who had been admiring Layonsari’s beauty for a long time. In jealousy, the King ordered Jayaprana away to fight for the kingdom. Jayaprana, loyal and courageous agreed but sadly met his death in battle. Pulaki Temple is dedicated to Jayaprana’s courage and dignity.

The temple is located in the Pemuteran village, the eastern part of Buleleng regency. It nestles on a foothill directly in front of the coast. During the rainy season, the dry brown mounds behind the temple transform into sparkling green hills. Black and white stone dominates the temple’s architecture, as if the hills themselves were being carved to create it. Monkeys roam the temple, cheekily disrupting the people bringing offerings.

Nevertheless, Pulaki Temple is a spectacular experience. Upon entering, one arrives at the mid-court. From here the beguiling blue of the Javanese Sea can be seen clearly, bordered by jade-coloured hills. The main court further up is never silent, serving as the monkeys’ main ‘hangout’, whilst they await their next opportunity to steal fruit. A more spectacular view is available from the upper part of the temple compound, looking over a truly picturesque scene of the ocean and hills below.!
