After years of arduous research I have managed to come up with a short list of some of Ubud’s best and most enjoyable eateries. There are more and there are others, but these will be sure to keep punters happy and cover a wide cross section of tastes.

After years of arduous research I have managed to come up with a short list of some of Ubud’s best and most enjoyable eateries. There are more and there are others, but these will be sure to keep punters happy and cover a wide cross section of tastes.

Starting from the top we try Cascades – probably the most romantic spot in town. This restaurant, part of the Classy Viceroy Resort, Cascades never fails to deliver feelings of ease and contentment. Looking over the historic Petanu River, diners can gaze on a scene of abject nature while dining on tastes of abject excellence. A long leisurely lunch, or a fine dining diner, with exquisite cocktails and fabulous fare, it is a place to go. A celebration is called for and if not a special occasion, by just being there, it becomes a special occasion. It’s time to celebrate!

Kebun Bistro – is another great place to go. With a gorgeous décor that recreates a Tuscan farmhouse and a brilliant menu of culinary artisan food favourites, including a huge Chocolate Souffle, cheese plates, Spanish style garlic prawns and fabulous mains you just can’t go wrong. Oh they also serve the best crème brulee in town!

Factor in a well considered wine list at almost reasonable prices and super cocktails and it just ensures a great night out. The leisurely Sunday brunches are also worth a look in.

Ryoshi – when we feel like Japanese in a cool environment with hot sake and chilled sushi, then it’s time to head to Ryoshi. Sitting at low tables with cushions, enjoying the ambience, it’s time to tuck in. The great thing about Ryoshi? They serve all the tourist Japanese favourites – who cares if it’s what the folk eat at home! Great Sushi, fresh sashimi, crispy tempura, delicious cold noodles, ramen, soba, creamy chawamushi – they are all there. Sometimes you may even be lucky enough to find some specials on the menu and they are also great.

Taco Casa – golden tacos filled with fresh salad, cheese and a delicious beef concoction – these tacos are my favourite health food. It’s like healthy with flavor! The well trained staff buzz around attending to orders promptly and the super clean kitchen is always abuzz with action.

Some of the best margaritas in town, cold beers, and a great lime ginger concoction all conspire to go well with this delicious Tex Mex outlet. This is not fine dining but it sure is fine! Ole!

The Elephant – is fast becoming everyone’s favourite lunch spot. Sister restaurant to Zucchini in Jalan Laksmana, The Elephant looks out over a divine view of the Campuhan Ridge and abundant nature. It is far enough away from the road to be blissfully quiet and is just the place for a relaxing lazy lunch. Yes it is vegetarian, yet even the most enthusiastic of meat eaters can afford to go meatless now and then. If you try the large antipasto with smoky eggplant dip instead of the proffered hummus, you won’t even notice that meat is missing. Sundried tomatoes, luscious juicy olives, grilled capsicums and more all to be enjoyed with crusty home made bread. It’s great. Last visit, my companion went for the Laksa, but was quickly drawn to my enticing plate of goodies, which disappeared in the blink of an eye.
