Perhaps the best thing about staying in The Stones is how close it is to Legian’s ‘Ngrupuk’ ceremony, part of the pre-Nyepi rituals that sees giant monster effigies (or ogoh-ogoh) paraded through the streets. The demonic figures are lined up on Jalan Legian (road) from 4pm the day before Nyepi, before being carried to the temple at Jalan Raya Legian. It’s a lively display, and since the roads are closed it’s best to be walking distance to catch it. Before this however, the island also experiences a “cleansing ritual” called Melasti, where you’ll see hundreds of Balinese processions taking place.
Nyepi starts when the sun rises on the 17th until it rises again on the 18th, during this time you won’t be able to leave the property. It may sound daunting having to stay indoors but really its an opportunity to kick back and really relax.
