Bali’s most revered contemporary art exhibition returns. For lovers of art, there have only been a handful of destinations in which to appreciate the creative talent found on the island, past and present. With the opening of the AB • BC Building in Nusa Dua in 2018, however, that has changed. Debuting with a ‘Beyond the Myths’ exhibition last year, the highly anticipated showcase of local and foreign artists has returned with ART BALI 2019.
This year’s theme is ‘Speculative Memories’, comprised of a total of 32 Indonesian and foreign artists, displaying 49 works including installations, sculptures, videos, painting and new media.
The exhibition, which last for 3 months from 13 October 2019 to 13 January 2020, was curated by Ignatia Nilu and Rifky Effendi. The 32 artists explored their own narratives and interpretations of the theme ‘Speculative Memories’, aimed at elaborating or critiquing on historic events in Indonesia and around the world. Memory, both personal and collective, frames the way in which one sees the past, the different perspectives of the past, hence the introduction of the word ‘speculative’.
“Speculative boasts the act of looking for possibilities to experiment, explore, deform, reposition, and more. Naturally, memories are born neurologically, both in humans and all living things. Yet today, memory is also supported by technology, integrated with machines, computers and the internet” as Ignatia Nilu said.
Each work has embodied its own reality based on memories which are also formed by pieces of small stories that have been buried, washed away, unearthed, (re-)discovered and (re-)presented today. “From here, we can witness the stories and facts that are not only linear, but often lyrical, and play a role in fostering the journey of humanity” as Rifky Effendy said.
ART BALI 2019 presents visual art works in various mediums, such as paintings, installations, and works with new art media. Out of the 49 works, you will find 25 two-dimensional works and 5 three-dimensional works as well as 19 installations / multimedia / videos / and other media.
