“A good breakfast can make or break the day. It sets the mood and spirits high and shifts us into a good gear. Here we check out two of Ubud’s top places – the Maya Resort and Spa has one of the most luxurious breakfasts in town, whilst Kebun offers a delicious range of dishes for their artisan brunch each weekend.”

The well-groomed Maya Resort is minutes from central Ubud on the road to Pejeng. With Australian chef Catherine Townsend at the helm, diners descend into an extraordinary display of dishes with something for everyone.

Fresh tropical fruits come in ripe abundance – a treat for those fresh off the plane. Juices and other tidbits abound. Germans and other Europeans will be impressed with the array of excellent house-made breads and cold cuts to pile onto their gleaming white Royal Doulton plates. Indonesians and adventurers will be impressed with the delicious Indonesian dishes and there is a small Japanese section for those who feel that way inclined. Chef Catherine even keeps a secret stash of Vegemite for Australians!

Freshly cooked Martabak comes with marsala and spicy sambal – then there are delicious sausages, and the other breakfast staples. Specialty teas and coffees are also part of the service.

Catherine is deservedly pleased with her breads and pastries (which change every day), especially her ultra light and fluffy croissants. The secret, she says is in the butter – and who knew there were so many varieties! She uses New Zealand butter for cooking and a creamy French butter for eating and an extra special one for the croissants. And the secret is out! Butter is good for you. It helps the memory while it assists the body to absorb much-needed nutrients from our food.

She believes too, that a good breakfast is what we need to make our day enjoyable and goes to great lengths to provide a memorable one.

Kebun on Jl Hanoman is a boutique restaurant, serving artisan food. The small and intimate surroundings attract a crowd who enjoy the Tuscan Farmhouse style décor as much as the food. French music sets the scene.

The brunch is a new addition to their regular lunch and dinner menu.  With Chef Adi together with manager Frankie, they make sure everything comes out just right, from the gorgeous crusty, European-style breads to the tantalizing combination of juices. A cocktail you say? Well why not! It is brunch and we are definitely here to enjoy ourselves!

One of the stars on offer is the Lox and Bagels – the home made bagels come loaded with cream cheese, cucumber, lashings of smoked salmon and capers with a little salad to garnish. To try it is to fall a little bit in love.

Their breads too, are fabulous – bagels, croissants of almond, chocolate or plain, crusty brown loaves, baguettes, muffins, toast – make plenty to choose from.

Try the fluffy ricotta pancakes served with genuine maple syrup – a sweet start to the day- or the frittata. With rosemary-baked pumpkin, baby potatoes, and feta served with toast, it makes a nice change from the usual eggs.

But if eggs are your desire, there is plenty of choice here too – Eggs Benny with lox, capers and hollandaise sauce on an English muffin makes for an egg dish yang istemewa (special)! Omelettes come in various guises, such as the Omelettes de Provence with fresh herbs, goat’s cheese, baby tomatoes, a salad bouquet and toast – perfection!

The diet conscious can choose the white omelette made with egg whites and those who enjoy a traditional meal can try the Big brekkie, with all the things you would expect.

Brunch cocktails include Bloody Mary or Mimosa, also available by the jugful!  Coffee, either French press or Espresso and specialty teas are all there to be enjoyed.

With the diminutive Parisian songbird, Edith Piaf singing of love and loss in the background, it is certainly a place to enjoy.!
