“Out of simplicity can come excellence, and the food at Benkay is a case in point.”

I’ve always been a fan of Japanese delicacies; and although Japanese restaurants in Bali are often undervalued and overlooked, I’ve found some favorites over the years – and Benkay is one of them. Whether it’s a steaming bowl of udon, super-fresh sashimi or an enticing Japanese special dinner course I’m after, I always find them here.

Benkay may be swish (most of the time with well-to-do patrons propping up the amply stocked sushi bar), the fixtures and fittings expensive, but when it comes to the food, much of the wow factor is down to high-class ingredients that haven’t been messed around with too much.

But what makes Benkay so different? Perhaps it’s the top-caliber chef the restaurant employs as part of its professional team. Or, maybe it’s the fresh fish the restaurant serves that is always at the perfect temperature or the cuts of sashimi that are just right.

Anyway, maintaining the essence of the cuisine, Benkay provides a wide variety of interesting and delicious dishes that range from grilled dishes, deep-fried dishes, teppanyaki, noodles, soups and hot pots, sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, and of course sushi and sashimi – all of which are heaven for my tastebuds.

The service is genuinely friendly in that unique Bali genre, but also polished in that five-star way and highly efficient. My overall experience at Benkay is unquestionably up to par.
