Bali’s Yogic Buffet
Amidst the jam-packed days of cultural exploration, adventure, sightseeing, and slinking around on the beach, it’s important to squeeze in a time to keep your body fit and balanced; and doing yoga can be one of the best ways to replenish your body, mind, and spirit. Whether you are a resident or a visitor, new to yoga or an experienced practitioner, there will be somewhere here on the island for you to properly practice. Just remember one thing: Bali is all about fun, so let playfulness be your guide as you let your body move you into those poses!
Down south in Jimbaran, the Four Seasons at Jimbaran Bay is where the island’s evolution as a leading wellness and yoga destination reaches the next level as Earth, Water, Fire and Air converge for a unique program of Night Fire Yoga (every Tuesday 7-8pm) on the edge of the Indian Ocean. Held on the resort’s new Nirvana Shanti Yoga Bale, you’ll be surrounded by the warm glow of tiki torches and kissed by the sea breeze as you are led through dynamic Vinyasa postures influenced by the fire element Manipura Chakra, inducing a state of calm and deep relaxation for the perfect pre-sleep ritual. The Night Fire series is exclusive to Four Seasons at Jimbaran Bay, and was inspired by the use of fire in many Balinese-Hindu rituals and dances.
The new wellness venue is the latest upgrade at the resort. In keeping with the Four Seasons at Jimbaran Bay’s Balinese village design concept, the Nirvana Shanti Yoga Bale is open-air to embrace the natural environment, with thatch-roofing and coconut wood pillars. Meaning ‘peace of Heaven’ in Sanskrit, it is nestled in a secluded corner of the foreshore, offering glorious views across Jimbaran Bay and the south-west coast.
Moving away to Petitenget, W Retreat & Spa Bali – Seminyak with their Yoga at WOOSKY allows you to get into your zen in true W style, where you can strike a morning and sunset pose with the beats of their resident DJs. Their Morning Yoga (every Saturday, starts at 7am) is a 75-minute session on a spot that provides the bird’s eye view of the Petitenget beach below. Those participating in the morning session get a complimentary access to the detox and decompress spa facilities at the resort’s AWAY Spa.
Equally smashing, the 60-minute of energising Sunset Yoga (every Sunday, starts at 5.30pm) will have your yoga session facing the legendary Bali sunset, and an access to the sunset session at WOOBAR. Both the morning and sunset yoga sessions at W come with a bottle of mineral water and W’s FIT blended shooter. To complete your wellness visit to W, you may also want to make a stop at the resort’s CHILL Bar for another glass of healthy concoctions, probiotic smoothies, or refreshing light finger foods, and delicious fresh green salads.
Also in Petitenget, Soham Wellness Center is the new kid on the area’s yoga block. This is the latest addition to the wellness spots in South Bali where you can take time out to address the effects of your busy lifestyle, and, of course, do yoga! The centre’s wellness facilities include a spacious, dedicated yoga room with 4 to 5 yoga classes a day. Open Monday to Saturday from 7.30am to 6pm, the wellness centre offers classes that range from hatha, bikram, to power yoga.
In Canggu, just minutes away from the island’s party Mecca, Desa Seni’s daily yoga program caters to all levels and offers a variety of yoga styles led by a qualified, dedicated, and passionate team of teachers. When it comes to yoga, Desa Seni know what they’re doing, especially since the Desa Seni School of Yoga is internationally accredited by The Yoga Alliance and brings together a team of highly experienced teachers who provide daily classes, personal yoga retreats, continuing education courses, and teacher trainings in a supportive and nurturing environment.
If you’re coming with a group of friends, Desa Seni also organises group retreats, workshops and field trips throughout the year. Alternatively, you can choose from a selection of distinctive private yoga retreats where your exclusive yoga teacher will lead you on a personal journey through deeper exploration, based on your individual needs, goals and objectives. Their teaching staff can cater to all levels of yoga experiences, specialising in personal programs designed for injuries, illnesses, overall health and well being. This personal one on one session pays particular attention to your individual requirements and individual goals. All props and a delicious complimentary lemongrass tea are provided.
Of course, as the island’s wellness capital, Ubud is simply a yogic buffet. The Yoga Barn, a household name in the island’s wellness scene, is known for its daily classes and workshops that range from traditional yoga styles of Classical Hatha, Vinyasa Flow, Power, Pranayama, Restorative, Iyengar, Yin and Anusara surrounded by a lush and inspiring environment for the nourishment of mind, body and soul. It has 5 studios appropriately named as a Balinese family would be: Wayan (first born), Made (second born), Nyoman (third born), Ketut (fourth born) and the more remote Lotus Studio. Daily Yoga Classes are mostly scheduled in studios Wayan and Nyoman, while the other studios are often used for group retreats and workshops.
As a retreat centre, The Yoga Barn has 9 guest rooms that are located on the edge of the east side of the property. The rooms are used for those who intend to use the facilities at The Yoga Barn for 3 days or more, and for the centre’s in-house Short Break Yoga Retreats.
A short drive away from The Yoga Barn, the Four Seasons at Sayan plays host to Bali’s first AntiGravity® yoga classes. The resort’s Dharma Shanti Yoga Bale is where you will have your 60-minutes of gravity-defying poses as you hang on a hammock that is able to support bodies of all ages and abilities into enhanced and inverted postures to relieve stress, encourage healthy blood circulation, and, in short, have fun!
In addition to AntiGravity® Yoga, the Dharma Shanti Yoga Bale also offers a daily 7am class of Sunrise, Power or Laughter Yoga that is complemented by the popular Life Talk series: A programme of talks hosted by resident Wellness Mentor Ibu Fera, a lovely woman that guides you towards inner peace, happiness, stress management and compassion.
In Payangan, in a village called Puhu, Padma Resort Ubud lays out the yoga mats amidst beautiful, misty mornings. Taking place on the lawn by the resort’s infinity swimming pool, you get to practice yoga and breathe in the freshest air of Payangan’s bamboo forest while watching the sun rise up. Your experienced, friendly Padma yoga instructor will guide you through a series of poses that are in accordance with your skill level – beginners seriously need not be afraid.
While in Padma, elevate your personal fitness regime to new heights along the resort’s innovative jogging and walking track.
