Finding refuge in the traditional hillside village of Banjar Puhu, Payangan, the newly opened Anantara Ubud Bali Resort promises true seclusion in a jungle-ensconced retreat found north of Ubud.

After much anticipation, the long-awaited Anantara Ubud Bali Resort opened its doors on 1 October 2024, revealing to the world its enviable location nestled upon a forested valley backdropped by Bali’s sacred mountains. The resort’s grand lobby entrance offers a bird’s eye view of the verdant highland surroundings and the many fabulous pockets of this luxury property, cascading down the dramatic valley slopes.

At the heart of this top-floor lobby space is a ‘Gamelatron‘, a bespoke, moving sculpture of Balinese gongs (gamelan) that electronically plays; an apt metaphor for the resort as its fuses tradition and modernity through its design and aesthetic. This centre piece is flanked by panoramic views but none can beat the experience of the Lobby Deck, an outdoor terrace space that looks out directly to Bali’s mother volcano, Mt. Agung, towering behind the opposite valley.

What is perhaps most unique about Anantara Ubud Bali’s location is its perch at the very beginning of this long and extending valley, which has meant that each corner of the resort offers brand new perspectives of its surroundings. The 85 villas and suites, two infinity pools, two restaurants and separate spa building each boast their own special point of view.

Guests can choose from a selection of 85 commodious suites and pool villas, each offering plenty of space to breathe and relax. The suites, each an airy 53 square metres, boast plush furnishings crafted from natural materials, with subtle Balinese adornments giving each room a timeless elegance. Oversized bathtubs enclosed within expansive viewing windows invite for long soaks enjoy views to the surrounding forest or private garden balconies.

Meanwhile, the terracing one- and two-bedroom villas are their own little sanctuaries. Private infinity pools positioned on the edge of forest-facing terraces make for the ultimate view to wake up to. The commodious accommodations, feature grand, marbled bathrooms and balconies that add to a palatial, five-star feeling, complemented by a dedicated villa host.

Though only minutes drive away from central Ubud, Anantara Ubud Bali is designed to make guests feel like they are worlds away, offering a comprehensive selection of in-house facilities including two heated swimming pools, one for adults and one of families, a jungle-clad yoga deck, fully-equipped gym by TechnoGym, and a dedicated kids club and teen facilities.

When it comes to dining, Amerta is the resort’s signature restaurant where Chef James Willis brings his fine dining expertise to the fore, offering Mediterranean-inspired, fireside dining for decadent dinners. Kirana, the resort’s all-day dining venue, is where lavish international breakfast buffets and authentic Indonesian flavours are found; Lobby Lounge is where to enjoy afternoon tea and views of Mt.Agung, and Sulang alfresco bar is an intimate cocktail spot come evening, opening up to the adult-only infinity pool.

Finally, the renowned Anantara Spa is given its own stand alone building, set as a separate destination for ultimate relaxation and downtime. Guests can enjoy indigenous treatments and healing therapies, hair styling at the on-site salon, and other wellness experiences from visiting practitioners.

The spa integrates its surroundings into the treatment rooms, with bay windows that open up to the immediate forest, where the sounds of birds, breezes blowing through the leaves and chirp of insects add to the atmosphere – a real back-to-nature experience.
