Let’s climb out of bed and take your kids to a place where they can run around and you can unwind. Kemenuh Butterfly Park is a great attraction in the Gianyar Regency. Situated between Denpasar and Ubud, it takes around one hour drive both from Kuta or Ubud.
Your family fun educational journey begins at the lobby where information about the life cycle of the butterflies are displayed on the walls. Their staff will greet you warmly and direct you to the information wall before you enter the garden. The kids and you will be amazed with the amount of butterflies flying freely inside. The beautiful insects that live up to a maximum of two weeks seem to enjoy their short lives.
This park is a definitely child friendly as children can run freely on the pathways set out amidst the trees and attractive flowers. Parents who love photography can spend hours in the park shooting the various colours of butterflies. Inside the park, there is a special space, which is the cocoon house. This is the place where the park keeps the cocoons of the endanger species, such as the beautiful moth locally known as Kupu-kupu Barong.The cocoons are carefully taken care of until the butterfly pops out of it. At this cocoon house, there is always one staff from the park on standby and ready to provide you with information on each species of butterfly that lives in the park.
In the park, the children can learn the role of the butterfly in the world as they watch the charming insects collect the flower’s nectar and at the same time help the plants reproduce. Watch carefully, you may spot a couple of butterflies mating while hanging on a fresh green leaf. A butterfly goes through four stages of life. First, the egg that then hatches and gives birth to larva or caterpillar. The caterpillar spends its life eating and munching the leafy greens until they get big and it’s time to weave a cocoon around its body. It takes around two weeks until a beautiful butterfly pops out from the cocoon.
The kids and you can also learn about tropical flowers and plants. The owner of the park planted several significant species of flowers and plants intentionally as they are essential for butterfly and caterpillar’s diet. There are flowers that bloom in every season and there are also seasonal flowers. There are orange trees, betel leaf, and soursop trees which leaves are the favourite food for the hungry caterpillar.
Besides learning about butterfly and plants, you can just enjoying the garden while the kids try to chase the butterflies. The visit to the park will be a combination of light exercise and learning about the most beautiful insect in the world.
