What is the future of Bali’s buildings?

Personal Perspective | Written By, NOW! BALI | September 8th, 2014

Is there a new style of architecture in Bali, one that still represents the cultural values of Bali, but presents a new face and feeling to the island’s style? This is the question that planners face as Bali enters a new phase of development. Sadly, the traditional architecture, based on the ancient motifs and symbols of Bali, combined with a strict set of ergonomic rules, ensured a continuity of style and spatial planning, both within traditional family compounds and the actual layout of a village, has been all but left behind.

But what is the replacement? What is the agreed form of the New Bali Style?

What it is NOT is the horrible shop house which is built by people with no imagination, no education, no sense of community or local culture. And approved by people with even less.

What it is NOT is the western style villa, built seemingly without permits, since almost all 20,000 concrete and steel monsters built in the last 20 years contravene local building codes.

What it is NOT is a two star condo hotel cramming 200 box rooms into a 1000 sqm lot; perfect for one traditional house and garden.

Over the next three months we will ask some of Bali’s top architects what they think the future of Bali’s buildings should be. So stay tuned and let’s see where we should be going. Let’s hope there is a bright and stylish future.!
