Welcome to the Island of the Gods

Soapbox | Written By, NOW! BALI | August 11th, 2014

Bali, if you haven’t been here before, is a very religious island, with the Balinese having their own form of Hinduism. There are many, many temples on the island, some of which are major tourist attractions but continue to be places of worship as well. St.Peters in Rome, Notre Dame in Paris and St Paul›s Cathedral in London are three Christian examples that perhaps put this into perspective. Visitors are permitted and even welcomed but good behavior and real respect is the order of the day.

The same rules apply to processions, funerals and other ceremonies. To you they may look like parties to be photographed and stuck up on your Facebook pages and shared through Instagram, but to those involved it is a serious and reverent occasion, and having sloppily dressed foreigners pushing cameras in their faces is an insult and cause for anger. I am always disappointed to see these amateur anthropologists pushing themselves in what may be an intensely personal moment.

So please enjoy these marvelous spectacles, revel in this unique and living culture, take your pictures and make your Facebook entries but please respect the Balinese, their beliefs and their places of worship completely.

One day you may also wish that same respect.
