warisan, a heritage of quality

With so many restaurants popping up all over Bali, the fact that I went twice in one week to Warisan shows I have either no imagination or that they are doing things very well, says Now! Bali’s Alistair Speirs! It definitely is the latter.

With so many restaurants popping up all over Bali, the fact that I went twice in one week to Warisan shows I have either no imagination or that they are doing things very well, says Now! Bali’s Alistair Speirs! It definitely is the latter.

What are any of us looking for in a restaurant in fact? Of course the food is number one but if the service is bad, the atmosphere lacking and the location impossible then there’s no point in going! Eating out is supposed to be an enjoyable experience. So let’s start with the food.

My best meal of the two occasions, consisted of Tuna Tataki with Sesame Seed, Ponzu Sauce, Green Asparagus, Kefir Lime Sorbat followed by Veal Scallopini Piccata, Tiroler Smoked Ham, Sauteed Bok Choy, Shitake Mushroom Sauce, Risotto Ball Stuff with Mozzarella with a Pannacotta Perfumed with Grappa, Strawberry and Kiwi Salsa Ginger Caramel to finish. And each dish completely exceeded expectations which is the ultimate accolade. Others in our party were especially impressed by the Seafood Casserole (Seabass, Prawn, Squid, Clams) with Tomato and Basil, Mashed Potatoes with Black Olives, which was found to be succulent and full of flavour. I believe the rest of the menu is extensive and to the same high standards.

But what about the atmosphere? This for me is a winner. The configuration is a courtyard so you can dine under the stars if the weather is good, or around the edges under cover if there is rain. Both are good. One side is the long bar, a pleasure to sit at and enjoy the many well made cocktails, two other sides are Warisan’s excellent art and furniture shop which provides a classy and interesting tableau, and a serious temptation for those interested in Indonesian art and handicrafts!

Service is friendly and courteous, with perhaps more experienced waiting staff than the newer establishments, and they have a good working knowledge of both food and wine. The management team under the watchful eye of Chetin Candan the sophisticated host is efficient and organized, but I am making this seem rather more formal than it really is. This is a delightful, unhurried charming place for both lunch and dinner and while not being one of the see-and-be-seen spots is therefore more relaxed, less frenetic and excellent value for money.

Overall I recommend this heritage restaurant for a romantic evening of good food in a special atmosphere, and it has plenty of off street parking at the back, a major plus for me!
