Families come in all sorts of dynamic dimensions and often enjoy holidays together in configurations that go way beyond the stereotypical “mum, dad and the kids” scenario. This month NOW! Bali highlights some very special spa experiences that can be enjoyed by everyone in every kind of family.

For many years the Bali Adventure Tour company has been operating the Elephant Safari Park and Lodge in Taro, taking guests to the “Safari Under the Stars” night safari, mountain cycling and on jungle trekking tours as well as running their white water rafting adventures. Recently, the company opened a hub for all their activities: The Adventure Centre. Amongst the many offerings is the gorgeous SHINTO SPA, a real treat for those coming out of the water after riding the rapids, clambering down from an Elephant Safari or alighting from a mountain bike. It also works as an excellent alternative for a family member or two who may not feel like taking on the day with an outdoor adventure and instead would prefer someone else to take charge while they spend a day luxuriating in the relaxing atmosphere of the beautifully designed Shinto Spa, indulging in the two hour treatments before a leisurely lunch and then back again for grooming and skincare.

The Taiyo Ryoho treatment is a perfect choice post mountain biking as it has a cooling effect and will nourish the skin. Designed to prevent premature aging the treatment incorporates white lotus into a facial and body wrap to rejuvenate and soothe the skin after sun exposure. For a deeper, longer indulgence the Shiroi Hachisu two-hour purification ritual includes a gel hydration of White Lotus and Green Tea. This is also an excellent treatment for family members who are feeling sensitive after over doing things and are not yet ready for the challenge of the great outdoors.
After a day with elephants the Chikyu Body Treatment is a must, the healing powers of warmed aromatic mud will keep you in touch with the nature that is so much a part of adventure in Bali. It’s also really good for aches and pains so it is good if you need to ease away any body strain after riding on the elephants.
The other services offered include Pevonia facials and the full OPI treatment for manicure and pedicure that, after a day of rugged activity, might be a happy way for the entire family to unwind and enjoy the facilities of the Adventure Centre and plan on whether to eat at the Restaurant and Grill or to dine on sushi at Sushi Attack.

The AsiaSpa Awards used to have a category for Best Children’s Spa Menu and It comes as no surprise that Balinese spas were up there in the final nominations. Balinese massage is great for kids, Balinese families use massage to treat all sorts of childhood ailments and while it may seem unfamiliar to the western family, the idea of having a family massage therapist is not unusual at all in the East.

Jari Menari is one of Bali’s top massage training schools and its outlets in Seminyak and Nusa Dua are the place to visit for an authentic massage experience that can be enjoyed by everyone. Their massage classes, which are held on Tuesdays, are open to younger students accompanied by their parents and are of particular value if you take your own group of six or more. Here you can learn the techniques that will allow you to give, and if you take your kids, receive, good massages long after leaving the island.

Jiwa Spa at the Conrad in Tanjung Benoa has a famous kids menu that is all about bubbles and fun, less like the traditional treatments the Jiwa Spa kids menu is more about creating a really great bathing time, with added treats for both boys and girls, including specially delivered snacks and drinks. A little indulgence for the younger ones can buy the adults some peaceful moments alone to enjoy the quiet spaces of the resort.

Glo Spa in Seminyak, Sanur and Nusa Lembongan have recently won accolades for their beauty treatments from the Bali Best Brand Awards. The GLO package, Kids a Glo Glo, is a super treat for any girls wishing to be pampered, the therapists are trained to high professional standards and take very good care, not trimming cuticles or using strong polish removers on sensitive skins. The mini-me treatments, the especially kid conscious haircuts and the superman capes can even get the boys in on the act. There is even a range of child delighting signature lotions with hints of strawberry and vanilla.
