In some parts of Bali they are hard to find now. You can drive around the villas in Petitenget, and Canggu, and only see white faces. Cycling, walking the dogs, driving their SUV’s, and increasingly zooming around on motorbikes.

Where are the Balinese?  Moved to where Bali is still Bali I hope, away from the concrete and steel monstrosities built by Western refugees, who care nothing for the traditions of Bali, or its culture or religion.

When people want a green card for the USA they have to pledge allegiance to the flag, learn English and promise to become an “American citizen”.  I’m thinking the same should apply to the thousands of foreign villa ‘owners’ who have desecrated Bali’s arable land, displaced her people, and changed the culture from a vibrant and living one to the ‘comfort and luxury’ based culture of the West.

If you want to live here, you had better understand the language, learn the history, and at least appreciate the religion. That should be the rule.

This would at least show some respect to the people of Bali, whose very lives have been changed, for the worst.  I’m sorry for being so blunt, but that’s how I feel based on 32 years of coming to Bali.

You may think that I am being overly critical of the rampant real estate development that has washed through Southern Bali over the last 15 years but I assure you that the Bali that was there before was better than what we have now, and you will find no real estate ads in this magazine, so we put our money where our mouth is.  The only publication in Bali to do so.

So be sure to explore the ‘real’ Bali, away from the resorts and developments of Kuta and Seminyak and into the realm of rural Bali and its traditional people; the farmers, the fishermen, the dancers, the young people.

Have a wonderful holiday, and when ever possible interact with the people of Bali in the most positive way you can. It is their island after all.
