Shrimp Fest at Bale Udang

I was on a trip to a famous historical site in Bali called Goa Gajah, located just 10 minutes away from central Ubud, when I saw a large, attractive bamboo building. Upon closer inspection, and to my surprise, it was a well-known restaurant, Bale Udang. Many, including myself, have tried their Indonesian cuisine in their southern branch on Jalan Nakula, Legian. So I stopped by to experience the fresh atmosphere of this new Ubud establishment.

Walking into the restaurant, I enjoyed the views of the open rice fields, the restaurant’s next-door neighbors. The main space is made up of two levels of bamboo construction, surrounded by a large fishpond. Bamboo bungalows decorate the side of the pond, so every guest can enjoy the serene scenes of gentle fish swimming around them. I went through the menu whilst enjoying the fresh breeze and the sound of the water flowing from the nearby fountain.

Bale Udang has a myriad of shrimp dishes on their menu, and all of them look very enticing. Honey grilled prawn, grilled jumbo prawn with BBQ sauce were my personal favorites. The prawn is grilled to the perfect texture, with a generous serving of seasons, and the portions are large enough for two ‘prawn maniacs’. I also ordered their raw Sundanese salad named Karedok, a mix of raw bean sprout, long beans, and grated coconut – a wonderful blend of sweet and savory. Their fresh, grilled carp is another good choice, with its crispy skin and soft, steaming meat inside.

When the lunch was done, I spent a few minutes more at the bungalow, which served as great place to just relax. I also fed the surrounding fish with my left over rice. It was a simple pleasure, and added to the surrounding serenity as I let the food go down and enjoyed the view.!
