I took a closer look at the Courtyard Seminyak’s – Seminyak Meat Shop last month, where I sank my teeth into the restaurant’s mouthwatering carnivorous treats.

Currently in our beloved South Bali, barely a day passes without news of an exciting new restaurant opening, or a groundbreaking, must-try dish. Yet despite the big gun chains and more storming into town, and creating traffic jams and seating areas that overlook the gridlocked road, Seminyak Meat Shop (SMS) seems to keep on going north.

Talk about bravado. Or maybe they just knew that the strength of their menu, their hospitality and the quality of their food would find a local following quickly. And that’s already happened. It’s just hard not to love SMS, especially for a meat lover like me. For me, it’s the restaurant’s unconditional love for meat that drives the menu – both the chef and his team have done a stellar job fashioning their meat offerings.

Then again, the island’s meat fanatics do not nosh on great steaks alone. So what is it that makes this bijoux restaurant special? Maybe it’s the attentive service, or the knowledgeable servers, or probably their range of delectable choice of sauces, from international to local flavours.

Anyway, looking at the restaurant’s simple menu, I knew I was in for some juicy, meaty treats. After sipping the fresh mojito, my Lamb Cutlets arrived on my table. Presented on a hot plate, the dish in itself was a feast for the eyes. It was seriously like Christmas on a plate; the shiny red cherry tomatoes and the green rosemary leaves made the lamb look so festive. A perfect December meal.

I’ve always loved good lamb cutlets (or chops), and the ones served in SMS were up to par. I could tell from the fresh pink centre as I sliced one open, that the cutlets were well prepared; they’re not overcooked and definitely flavoursome. The black pepper sauce really complemented the cutlets. The next time I’m here, I’d go with the Sambal Matah or Sambal Uleg, the restaurant’s signature sauces.

My lunch date went with SMS’ Striploin Steak. Probably the most famous of steaks, the striploin at SMS is as good as it gets. It’s full of flavour, and the cut is just perfect for one person. And in addition to the sauces, the side dishes really helped enhance the flavours of the meats; the portion of the side dishes were quite generous, too. From the menu you can choose Potato Mash, Thick Hand Cut Chips, Green Salad, Sautéed Mushroom, Wilted Spinach, or Sautéed Green Bean to go with your meats.

Of course, there’s more to SMS than red meats. The restaurant’s sumptuous Roasted Baby Spring Chicken is seasoned with the perfect amount of spices; it’s not just about the coat but are full of flavour all the way through.

Not just the meat lovers, those with sweet tooth are in for a treat, too. Though not that extensive, the dessert options at SMS can surely give that sweet finale to your toothsome feast at the restaurant. You can choose the Smore’s, Apple Cobbler, Banana Split Sundae, or the traditional Pisang Aroma and Bubur Injin.
