How to Find the “Real” Bali Spa

“Of course everyone wants their experience to be ‘real’, be it spa or adventure there is nothing worse than a showcase, faked experience that does not deliver what has been promised. However in Bali you need not be afraid, Bali is a place of genuine people, and no matter how extensive the marketing campaigns, promising the real this and the real that, you will always find real Bali in Bali.”

Now the bigger question is how real do you want your Bali spa experience to be, for there are plenty of real body workers on this island, real Balinese ones who for not so much in exchange can give you a real Bali experience. However, be wary that some real experiences may not be something you will enjoy, a lot of bone cracking is considered good bodywork in some circles, and a certain level of pain through the application of a sharp stick to the underside of your foot is another.

So let’s review the ‘desire’ for a real Bali Spa and instead look for an experience that can offer the best of Balinese healing techniques, the long stroke massage, the lulur bathing with yoghurt and the Balinese crème bath hair therapy. Also we may consider the ingredients and opt for spa treatments that use the finest of locally produced virgin coconut oils, sweet ylang ylang and frangipani essential oils and the stimulating coffee scrubs.

Location too is important so let’s start at the beach for a taste of real Bali at Theta Spa, go for a wander into the real Bali of Kuta and visit DaLa Spa at Villa De Daun, before heading over to Nusa Dua, the Government planned real Bali, designed to offer visitors the best of Bali without clogged streets and tourists. Here you can indulge in real Balinese treatments at the spa at the Sofitel Beach Resort and Spa. But if this is not real enough for you, do what the seasoned visitors do and head over the hills to the ‘real’ Bali of Permuteran and allow yourself the time to experience the Matahari Beach Resort and Spa.

theta spa

Theta Spa is located on the beachfront at Tuban’s edge, heading into Jimabaran, and is perfectly located for a slice of real Bali after a day of malls and mayhem at water parks. It is accessible from the beach or from the rear grounds of the Ramada Bintang Bali Resort.

Beautifully creative massages that use ingredients from Bali and Indonesia are delivered in clean and airy rooms that embrace the outside air and the ocean breezes to maximum effect, while offering privacy and discretion inside.

Try ‘Honey Love’, a treatment using live honey from the island of Borneo, a wrap of banana leaves and a sesame seed scrub, or if you are feeling a little sub-par, experience the health giving properties of a traditional Balinese Boreh which uses a paste of herbs to give stimulation and rejuvenation to the tired mind, body and soul. It’s an excellent fix for any sort of holiday malaise and a lovely way to kick start the energy you need to really get into discovering the ‘real’ Bali.

dala spa

DaLa Spa is further into Kuta, enjoy it for what it is, a real cosmopolitan mix of people who have found the means to discover that the streets are not really paved with gold and nor are the sands on the beach, but come sunset you forgive Kuta and feel blessed. DaLa Spa is a haven from the streets and tucked away inside the Villa De Daun on Jalan Raya Legian. DaLa means leaf in Sanskrit the real language of Bali, and like a leaf on a river you can float into a state of tranquility in the ambient spa rooms under the care of highly trained therapists. Opt for the Bunga Rampai package that uses ingredients of betel leaf, coconut, frangipani and kaffir lime to soothe and smoothen the skin, and soak in the rose and tuberose infused bath for an exotic elevation of the spirits.

The Sofitel Beach Resort Nusa Dua

The location and the design of the Sofitel So Spa will encapsulate and embrace you with its expansive views of the ocean, as you surrender to the gentle long stroke massages delivered by the Balinese therapists. The combination of the beautiful products of Clarins with the rituals of Balinese Spa therapy puts you in the very best of both worlds and in addition the Sofitel charm masters the gentle perfection over notes of Balinese harmony.

Matahari Beach Resort and Spa

The long coastline of North Western Bali could not be more ‘real’. A view to islands and volcanoes, a fleet of brightly painted fishing boats along the shore, the sounds of worship wafting through the air as the afternoon clouds roll over the mountains separating the area from the rest of Bali. This here is the real Bali and at the Matahari Beach Resort Parwathi Spa, the seductive scents of sandalwood, the polished wooden floors and the impressive entry gateway are the first steps you take into a spa that will deliver the best of Balinese traditional therapies, exquisite intensive massages and full body treatments. The Bali Sacred Garden oils used in the Bali massage combination taken on a full moon evening, maybe with a friend, is an authentic introduction to ‘real’ Bali for in our humble opinion ‘real’ Bali exists in the hearts and minds of the people who love, care for and understand their island.!
