It’s holiday time again, and the island is filled with celebrations and parties, which will get bigger and wilder as the month goes on… until the biggest party of the year takes off on the 31st… New Year’s Eve, or as we Scots call it, “Hogmanay”. But as much as the nights are filled with parties and celebrations, let your days be filled with nature and culture so you get a great balance. And this is the place for both. In fact, Bali is one of the few places that there is a “living culture” – one where culture is a part of everyday life.

Where it is visible, and alive, and not a show or performance as it is in so many places now.

Bali’s culture is very much based on its religion which is Hindu, and the Balinese are very strong followers of their beliefs and attend temple ceremonies whenever required, which is often! Their calendar is also aligned to their holy days and rituals, and New Year for them is not the 31st of December! So please be a little sensitive to where you are and what you do.

There is not much evidence of all of this in South Bali where much of Bali’s culture has been nearly eradicated by the influx of Western tourism, and a complete insensitivity to local beliefs and mores.

But when you go to a temple, see a procession, witness a cremation or just see a village dance you may wonder  “why did we replace this with shopping malls, restaurants, clubs and hotels?” We have those at home!

So enjoy party month, but don’t forget where you are, and whose island this is.
