Who would have thought grandma was right all those years ago?  The old chestnut ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away,’ turns out to be one of the simplest but best pieces of health advice available! Nowadays, instead of apples, we are given piles of statin drugs, which reduce symptoms and make us slaves to the chemical companies for life.  The chemical specialty seems to be to make drugs that we can’t live without, so maybe going natural is a better alternative. Rarely are the drugs made to cure, but to mask the symptoms and keep us paying out the dollars. Apples have an unbelievable array of health benefits, which we have just forgotten about since grandma’s time.  While cyberspace bombards us with ridiculous promises of miracle cures, it seems we have lost sight of the most simple of things.

Move over all you salacious super-fruits, you goji berries, pomegranates, you grapes and sirsaks. Make way for the humble apple!

Apples can lower cholesterol more effectively than statin drugs.  They also have plenty of other health benefits.  While they may take a little longer to work, the effect is about curing rather than curtailing.

Apples are filled with antioxidants; they help to repair and keep our cells in good condition.  They also help to produce saliva and keep our teeth white and healthy looking, thus reducing tooth decay by flushing away the bad stuff.  A host of degenerative diseases can be stopped or slowed down by crunching on an apple or two a day and if possible, by drinking fresh juice as well.

New research with mice is showing that drinking the fresh juice may help reduce the incidence of Alzheimer’s and have an anti-aging effect on the brain. The phytonutrients in apples cause an increase in the neuro-transmitter acetylcholine, which declines as we age.

Parkinson’s Disease is similarly affected so we can reduce the risk by munching on juicy apples daily. Pancreatic cancer risk is reduced by about 23% by regular consumption. Type 2 diabetes can similarly be calmed by daily apple intake.  Cholesterol is lowered as the fats in the stomach blend with the soluble fibre found in the apples and not only cholesterol but also the plaque that builds up in our arteries and can lead to coronary attacks.

Gallstones, diarrhoea and constipation are also directly affected by the apple’s active enzymes and the soluble fibre. Eating apples can help ease irritable bowel syndrome and haemorrhoids as well as providing a boost to your immune system, help controlling your weight, not to mention aiding the detoxification of the liver.  Last, but not least, research at the University of Nottingham has shown that people who eat 5 apples or more per week can lower their respiratory problems, including asthma.

So what sort of apples should we choose? The best are of course, the freshest and here in Bali, we can buy fresh apples that come from the Batu-Malang region in Java. Even the small ones will have the desired effect and the larger green variety, with a reddish blush will most certainly do the trick.

So bite into a juicy, rosy apple a day and remember grandma’s wise words.
