A destination is “a place that people will make a special trip to” according to one definition and Bali is a very special destination. No matter where you are from, your purpose here (except you business people!) is to relax, enjoy, unwind and experience something new. And if you take my advice, do exactly that: experience something new. Let me explain. There are a thousand things to do on Bali, but these we divided into “things you can only do here” and “things you can do anywhere”. If you do the latter while you are here you are missing out on the unique things that Bali has to offer.

Everyone has to eat every day, but to eat fast food – exactly the same as where you came from – is hardly stretching the imagination, nor creating memorable moments! Find a fantastic, unique Balinese or Bali-inspired restaurant and enjoy it. Everyone has to drink especially at the end of a hot day, but to go to a run-of the-mill bar and sink a cold one is missing the point. Go for the sundown cocktail on the beach or a delicious glass of wine in a cool venue.

If you want to shop, please don’t take home things you can buy at home, look for Balinese products and handicrafts (or at least Indonesian made goods). There are sculptures, art, cloths, woven basketwork, and locally made fashion – all top quality. You don’t need to go to the “Pusat Oleh-Oleh” unless you are in love with high-volume-low-quality goods designed for the local traveller!

But Bali is much more than that: it has rare beauty in the fields and mountains, it has walks through villages unchanged for centuries, it has dances of rare magical beauty, it has processions and ceremonies that are astonishing, it has temples you will never forget and museums filled with art. It is unique and if you look beyond the exploited, commercial south you will find “Real Bali”, its culture intact, its people still in touch with the land, its beliefs unaltered by the invasion of clubs, pubs, shops, malls, hotels and apartments. For now.

But the war is being lost so enjoy Real Bali now before it’s too late.
