Padang Galak beach is named after the village where it’s located – it is actually on the same stretch as the famous Sanur beach. While the water of Sanur beach is calm because of a reef barrier protecting the shore, Padang Galak beach is the place for surfers to find good waves. During the rainy season when the wind blows from the southwest to the east, surfers can experience the best waves.

Blessed with large waves, this beach also offers white sand, serenity, and a romantic, picture postcard view during sunrise. When the sun crawls up from the horizon, in good weather, the silhouette of the great Mount Agung can be seen in the north. Besides surfers, joggers also visit the beach, since a comfortable jogging track is available along the shoreline stretching from Mertasari beach in Sanur. In the evening, or on holiday, the locals come to enjoy the sand and water. People who seek healing also visit Padang Galak beach, but they go straight to the temple.

The temple, which is widely believed to cure people from severe illnesses, is named Pura Campuhan Windhu Sagara. The story of the temple has been passed from one person to another.  The tale describes the plight of a priest with severe renal failure who found a wooden stick when he was walking on Padang Galak Beach. Later on, smoke and fire came out of the stick. He had a strange presentiment to build a temple on the plot where he found the mysterious stick. The temple was finally built in 2005, but before that the priest had been cured from his illness.

Nowadays, dozens of people visit the temple for healing, not only the Balinese, but also from other islands. They mostly come in the evening and pray until dawn. Before the sun rises, the devotees bathe at the spot where the beach meets the Ayung River. It is believed that the healing power is received at that very moment of the day.
