Spa, as we often note in these pages, is these days more of a concept than a specific activity and as the spa ‘industry’ has grown it has come to encompass the multiple modalities of scientific approaches and traditional therapies entering into a new phase of wellness treatments that incorporate the best of all worlds to the benefit of the holistic individual, that is their physical, mental and spiritual well being. These integrated therapies are so beautifully created that they provide what we have been unable to give to ourselves. Relaxation time, physical activity time, contemplation and meditation time and they do this with addition of exquisite products and trained therapists so that in our lives we can be fast tracked to better balance and better living habits. Spa destinations like the Four Seasons and Alila Resorts do this exceptionally well in totally harmony with their surroundings as does Como Shambala and the Bayan Tree Ungasan, but for this month we are going to strip back to basics and offer ‘slow’ spa… just like the trend for ‘slow’ cooking our slow spa will give you goodness and authentic benefits in a way that your body, mind and soul will embrace, with a smile on your face!

Pick your fruit and eat it too…. 

It is standard to be served fruit after a meal, but eating fruit on an empty stomach is a much better way to reap the benefits of fruit. Fruit can detoxify, calm and energize you and each type of fruit has its own specific purpose. The kiwi fruit is tiny but packs a potassium punch – good for relieving stress and has twice as much Vitamin C as an orange! An apple a day will give you antioxidants and boost your Vitamin C intake and strawberries (get them fresh from Bedugul) have the highest total antioxidant power of the popular fruits. In the tropics learn to love your slices of watermelon, although 92% water it contains glutathione, which helps boost the immune system. Eat guavas for their fibre and papaya for lots of Vitamin C and good eye sight.

 

The Foot Massage 

It was hard to suppress a smile when city friends told me of the latest trend in ‘earthing’ or ‘grounding’ that was sweeping the urban centres of Asia. People were actually paying to take off their shoes and walk barefoot! This cannot be but, in this mad world we call home, it can! We even found some ‘scientific’ evidence for it. The Journal of Alternative and Complementary medicines tells us: “It is well established, though not widely known, that the surface of the earth possesses a limitless and continuously renewed supply of free or mobile electrons as a consequence of a global atmospheric electron circuits. Wearing shoes with insulating soles and/or sleeping in beds that are isolated from the electrical ground plane of the earth has disconnected most people from the earth’s electrical rhythms and free electrons. Subsequent studies have confirmed these earlier findings and documented virtually immediate physiologic and clinical effects of ‘grounding’ or ‘earthing’ the body”.

So, once you’ve eaten your fruit, talk a walk, bare-foot, just be careful where you tread. Walking on warm dry sand has an exfoliating and stimulating effect on the body, about twenty minutes walking will also assist in the digestion of your fruit.

 

The ‘Workout’ 

Place yourself in a comfortable position in loosely fitting clothing, preferably light cotton. Ensure your back and neck are supported and if sitting up support your knees with a cushion, if lying down place a pillow under your ankles. Now you will begin to “breathe”. Conscious breathing can bring optimized health, it increases oxygen in the blood that can maintain organ health and while men breath a little slower than women everyone can lower their breathing rates with practice. Start by taking a couple of deep slow inhalations and exhalations and then sit for a moment to notice the difference. If the sensation is good try taking four deep, slow breaths in and out and then return to normal breathing. Not only are you relaxing your mind but you are using muscles that improve posture, toning your abdominal area and reducing tension in your mind and body. The Yoga Barn in Ubud has classes on breathing and also relaxation yoga that will teach you great routines for this type of ‘spa’ treatment.

 

The Super Spa Treatment

Rain shower massages, water therapies, Kniepp baths and Thalasso  Spa are all essentially water, chakra treatments and colour therapy rooms use a variety of lighting shades while body scrubs contain natural ingredients that here in Bali can be sourced without difficulty.
